The electrical properties of a material are determined by its atomic structure and the way that its electrons are arranged. Conductors have loose electrons that are free to move, while insulators have electrons that are tightly bound to their atoms and do not move easily.

Understanding the difference between conductors and insulators is important in many areas of science and technology, including electrical engineering, electronics, and power transmission.
